Beyond Perfect from Buckshot Productions is not your typical adult video. I talked to its stars Brad Patton, Jason Kingsley, and Brad Benton on Friday afternoon as I tailed them around the Castro.Standing in front of HarveyÌs at Gay Ground Zero (Castro & 18th.), Brad Patton told me about just how different Beyond Perfect was from a typical adult film. "Our first whole day was 12 hours of shooting, all dialogue!" Brad marveled. "I had more dialogue in the first half hour of this movie than I have in all my other films combined!"
Brad also said he'd worked harder during his first 8 days filming this movie than he had on any other before, and was not done yet -- Brad's role would continue shooting for at least another three.

Here, hunky Jason Kingsley chimed in, "This kind of movie is a lot more intense, a lot more work -- energy-wise," than your typical porn. But, "I would rather do 4 movies like this than 10 'quickies'." Jason was referring to the highly emotional and tightly scripted nature of the movie, which involves two lovers who have been in a relationship for "three perfect years," but who seek out therapy when they realize they're having problems. What their therapist tells them -- well, I can't say, but it provides a bit of comic relief.
That said, I'm told the movie has a degree of "realness" about it that neither Brad nor Jason has experienced before. "Up to the end of the movie," Brad tells me, "the dialogue is quite serious, 'real', and life-like. For my part, I would rather be doing movies like this [than the other kind] and I hope to make a career of it."

When shooting of the "B Roll" was done for the day, we all made our way to the back patio of The Mix, where Production Coordinator Kristofer Weston bought everyone drinks and the conversation continued. Brad gets serious for a moment when I ask him why he left Falcon after being an Exclusive there for quite some time. "Let me just say that my two biggest supporters in this industry have always been Chi Chi LaRue and John Rutherford. And when I first went to Falcon, John was [President] there. John and I have been friends for a long, long time, and he was one of the main reasons I went to Falcon in the first place. Now I'm going to get to work with him again at COLT Studio Group, and also have the option to choose whatever project sounds fun for me. I'm really looking forward to it."
Over the course of our conversation, I was surprised to find that Brad is much more than a pretty face. He's quite articulate, with a cute accent that's the result of being born in Australia, raised in Sweden and Finland, and having now lived in Holland for the past two years. Brad wanted to make sure to point out one problem he has with the gay porn industry is its tendency to peg people as a "masculine top" or "femme bottom."
"Being gay," Brad says, "is not about two people being a 'man' and a 'woman'. And Beyond Perfect was so attractive to me because it dispels stereotypes about sexual roles. All of us get sick of reviews of movies where the reviewer says, 'Well, so-and-so acts butch in the movie, but he's not like that in real life!' Um, that's why they call it acting!"

Brad's background was also fascinating to hear. "Before I started this career, I was a professional ice skater for about 8 years. I went all around the world with Disney on Ice -- South America, Europe, 39 [American] States. I was also the first Rollerblade messenger in Sweden" -- as opposed to bike messenger. What a job! "It's a job that very few people could do," Brad adds, "because it's much more demanding than riding a bike. In fact, when I got done with one summer at that job, I had lost so much weight that when I returned to Disney on Ice in the fall, people thought I was severely ill. In reality, I had just burned off every spare calorie Rollerblading around Stockholm all day!"
During the time Brad was speaking, Jason Kingsley was right next to him, and both could hardly keep their hands off each other. I know things are different at movie shoots, but still... I would not be surprised to see these two couple up in real life. I ask them if they are boyfriends, and Jason says, "We're not boyfriends, but we were last night!" Brad adds, "We just have really good chemistry, which is lucky, because it's essential for a movie like this."
Jason was a little cagey about his background, but I was finally able to worm out of him that he works as a producer and musical director in South Africa. He had lots of praise for director Jerry Douglas' script. "The script had all the stage directions written out, everything is very blow-by-blow, so to speak, even the sex, since the context of the sex scenes and what happens in them is very important to the overall story." Contrary to popular belief, porn scripts do not have every, "Oh, yeah, fuck me harder, Daddy!" written down on paper. But Beyond Perfect sounds like it came close.
"Some people go into mainstream and think about going into porn," Jason adds, "but after this movie, and the emotional commitment required, I feel like I could go mainstream with my acting! It was that challenging." In talking to the guys, I heard a lot about Beyond Perfect's complex storyline, which sounds hot and intense. Unfortunately, they put a gag order on my about giving away the plot or the details. "I'll just say that the final scene, between Jason and me, is very, very hot," Brad says, and Jason adds, "We do at least one thing that's a first for gay porn, if not several!"
Since it was Jason's last night in town before flying back to South Africa, I soon left the two like-birds to get more acquainted, and was able to get some face-time with that other Brad, Benton.
Fresh off the latest three episodes of Wet Palms, Brad Benton is a ball of energy. When I ask him what role he plays in the movie, he says, "I play the tight end!" Jerry Douglas clarifies that Brad is someone who tempts a member of the Patton/Kingsley couple. "I'm a seductor, a homewrecker!" Brad adds happily.
Brad Benton has lots going on lately. He was recently on the reality TV show, Fight for Fame, and will also appear in the new movie Spunk'd from the people who brought you the gay favorite, The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Brad says Spunk'd is similar to HBO's Real Sex, and he will host clips such as a sex scene with a guy whose fetish is to dress up like a cow and get "milked" (jacked off.)
Beyond Perfect will be released on DVD in the coming months, look for it!
