Colt Studio Group called me from where they were shooting the new Buckshot DVD release, Beyond Perfect, in the Castro on Friday afternoon, so I high-tailed it down there.When I arrived at Rock Hard, where the crew was shooting an exterior shot, director Jerry Douglas (award-winning scripter on BuckleRoos, and director of numerous other flicks) immediately clapped his arm around me.
"Guerilla filmmaking is my worst nightmare!" Jerry shouted as he crushed out a Marlboro. We were standing on the busy sidewalk and there were makeup artists, other crew, and models present. As my eyes lingered over Brad Patton, in tight white jeans and a red sleeveless shirt, revealing every tan curve in his perfect physique; Jason Kingsley, tall, handsome and very built; and Brad Benton, playful as always, huddled before the store, Jerry and a few of the other filmmakers suddenly bolted up Castro street to scout locations, and I ran after them.
It was about 3 PM and the crew was having problems with pedestrians; too many of them gathering when they saw the cameraman and recognized the film's hot stars. Today we would be shooting the movie's ìB-Roll,î as production coordinator Kristofer Weston called it, non-sexual footage to be intercut with action scenes later. As we walked up the street to the film's next location, the sidewalk near the Castro Theatre, Jerry told me that the movie was about the unique subject of "couples counseling." Brad Patton and Jason Kingsley played a loving couple going through a rocky time, having clandestine trysts on the side as well as having group sex to spice up their for-some-reason-dull sex life.
Jerry mentioned that they had to do thirteen shots today, in part because this was Kingsley's last day in the U.S. before his flight back to South Africa — 29 hours!
Jason flew all that way to be in a porn? I asked. "Well, he fell in love with the script!" Douglas replied. Indeed he did, and so did Brad Patton, but more on that later.
As I scribled notes in my notebook, I became aware of the relentless pace of gay porn filmmaking. In just minutes, the stars showed up where we were, having changed into new costumes for the next shot. Then Jerry and crew were gone, across the street to get a long shot, and I was on the sidewalk somewhere near Brad Patton and Jason Kingsley. They were walking towards me, obviously being filmed. But where was the cameraman?! I didn't want to block the shot, so I ducked into a magazine store and pretended to read. Finally I came out and found the guys standing around the entrance to the Muni station.
Brad and Jason seemed to be very into each other, cuddling and smooching even when the cameras weren't rolling. I wasn't sure I wanted to interrupt them to ask questions, but finally decided, if Jerry's going to do guerrilla filmmaking, I might as well do guerrilla interviewing!

Jason Kingsley: My flight leaves Saturday night and arrives at 10 AM Monday morning. I'm going to lose a whole day of my life!
With that, the hunks were dragged away for a consultation with crew. "I know, it's just like being in the Army," Douglas sympathized, "hurry up and wait!" He asked to borrow my pen and scribbled notes on the shooting schedule, a crumpled piece of yellow paper covered with pencil scrawl that the director kept in a distressed leather backpack.
One observation: many of the porn stars I've met in real life have been surprisingly short, but not these guys. Brad Patton, Jason Kingsley, and Marcus Iron, who also showed up for a brief appearance, are all over six feet, which is kind of how you think big, strapping muscle studs should be.
I started to get a little dizzy (and to see what Douglas meant about guerrilla filmmaking being a "nightmare") as we meandered up and down Castro Street for the next hour or two, testing out locations, shooting a little video, then moving on. One very handsome young man in a tight red shirt caught my eye. He turned out to be Andy Briggs, appearing in his very first full-length porn ever. Andy has a very pretty face and very white teeth — you'd never guess he's 29. Andy told me he "performs oral sex on a group in a sleazy, dirty bar," the Powerhouse. I asked the newbie if he had always dreamed in being in porn. "It was a big curiosity," he said. "I've been waiting for the right time." He is originally from Costa Rica, but has lived in the U.S. for half his life. Like all the others on this shoot, he had nothing but praise for Jerry Douglas, John Rutherford, and COLT/Buckshot. "I've had so much fun! It was even more fun that I had hoped it would be." Andy hopes to do more movies with Buckshot Productions in the near future.
