Following an investigation into bareback gay porn by BBC Newsnight, three gay porn movies have been voluntarily withdrawn from sale by their manufacturers in Britain.GayVN says two of the withdrawn DVDs were from a shoot where 8 young lads engaged in bareback sex. "Four of those who took part in the shoot were later diagnosed as HIV positive." Gulp.
Of course, unless the performers were known to be HIV-negative before the shoot and that was their only risky experience, it is unknown whether the bareback sex caught on film was the cause of their HIV infection.
However, one performer is "distressed" because he believes the footage shows him becoming infected.
GayVN points out that most hetero porn is performed without condoms, though bareback is "somewhat taboo" in gay porn. British gay porn producer Steven Brewer is heading a campaign in the U.K. against it.
"I just don't want another 18-year-old model crying on my shoulder not sure how to tell his partner or his parents that he is now HIV positive," says Brewer.
Unfortunately, I think horror stories about bareback porn like this one reflect anti-porn bias more than reality. It is unlikely for bareback performers to contract HIV from one or two scenes on camera, even if they are the bottom and their scene partner is HIV+. As risky as it is to have unprotected anal sex on a regular basis, the CDC says there is a one-half of one percent, or 1 in 200, chance of contracting HIV from one act of unprotected anal sex from an infected top when you are the bottom (50 cases per 10,000 sex acts), and a 0.065% chance, or approximately 1 in 1500, chance if you are the top and the bottom is HIV+ (6.5 cases per 10,000 sex acts).
